How to Care for Your Pilates Grip Socks So They Last

You've invested in a good pair of pilates grip socks — now let's make sure they actually last. The most common reason grip socks lose their effectiveness is improper washing. Here's everything you need to know to keep them in great condition.

The Golden Rule: Cold Wash, Always

Heat is the enemy of silicone grip. Whether the grip dots on your socks are screen-printed or injection-moulded, high-temperature washing will cause them to peel, crack, or detach from the fabric over time. Always wash grip socks at 30°C or lower. A delicate or gentle cycle is ideal.

Turn Them Inside Out

Washing your grip socks inside out reduces friction on the silicone grip during the wash cycle. It also protects the outer fabric, keeping the colours bright and the knit structure intact for longer.

Skip the Fabric Softener

Fabric softener coats fibres with a waxy residue that reduces grip over time — both on the sock fabric itself and on the silicone dots. Skip it entirely for grip socks. A mild, fragrance-free detergent is all you need.

Air Dry Rather Than Tumble Dry

Just like with washing, heat from the tumble dryer degrades silicone grip significantly. Lay your grip socks flat or hang them to air dry after washing. In Irish weather this might mean drying them indoors — a clothes airer works perfectly. They'll typically be dry within a few hours.

Wash After Every Wear

This one is about hygiene as much as longevity. Reformer and mat pilates studios are shared spaces, and grip socks that aren't washed between sessions can harbour bacteria and odour. Washing after every wear also keeps the fabric fresh and the grip performing at its best.

Storage Tips

Store grip socks flat or loosely folded rather than balled up. Tight balling causes tension in the fabric and can weaken the grip-to-fabric bond over time. A small drawer or designated section of your gym bag works well.

When to Replace Them

Even with perfect care, grip socks don't last forever. Signs it's time for a new pair: the silicone grip is visibly peeling, the fabric has thinned noticeably at the heel or ball of the foot, or the grip no longer holds you confidently on a reformer footbar.
